3 Less Commonly Known Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

We’re all very familiar with the three most common symptoms of Type 2 diabetes which are polyphagia (increased eating), polydipsia (increased thirst), and polyuria (increased urination). There are other symptoms, of course, that are telltale signs of Type 2 diabetes like weight loss and wounds that take too long to heal or continue to bleed for more than the usual time.

However, there are less commonly known symptoms of Type 2 diabetes, too, that you should be aware of. These aren’t typically associated with diabetes, so sometimes the symptoms are ignored. It’s only when the symptoms begin to worsen that they visit their doctor.

#1 – Frequent Yeast Infections

Yeast infections, candidiasis, or jock itch is prevalent in women. In fact, 75% of the women population will have a yeast infection at some point in their lives. What is uncommon though is if you have chronic yeast infections that don’t go away even with medications.

Yeast loves sugar; they thrive in it. Women who have Type 2 diabetes are more prone to this kind of infection because of their elevated blood sugar levels.

#2 – Restless Sleep

If you think stress is causing your sleep problems, think again. High blood sugar level leads to frequent urination because the kidneys are always trying to get rid of the excess glucose to normalize blood sugar levels.

People with Type 2 diabetes usually have a restless sleep because of frequent urination. The frequent trips to the bathroom interrupt their sleep and cause sleep loss.

#3 – Sexual Problems

Intimacy is important in any relationship. It brings the couple closer, and it keeps the relationship healthy. Unfortunately, Type 2 diabetes can affect your sex life.

In men, there should be an adequate blood flow through the arteries to maintain an erection. In women, a proper blood flow is also needed for lubrication and sensation. Now, high levels of sugar in the blood can affect the rate of blood flow, resulting in a thicker blood consistency, decreased blood circulation, and sexual problems (reduced libido and inability to maintain an erection).

It’s important that you know and are aware of these less commonly known symptoms of Type 2 diabetes. If you’re having these problems, you should visit your doctor immediately.
