Have researchers found one pill that can control Type 2 diabetes?

Have our researchers found a wonder drug that can not only significantly reduce the blood sugar levels of Type 2 diabetics but promote weight loss as well? It would seem so!

What’s even more interesting about this new once-a-day pill is that it has the potential to replace the painful insulin injections and, at the same time, lets you lose weight. Amazing, isn’t it?

Introducing the Oral Semaglutide

In a study led by the researchers at the University of Leicester’s Diabetes Centre, Professor Melanie Davies, the head of the research study, has found that taking semaglutide orally can to reduce HbA1c levels and blood glucose levels. Semaglutide was also able to promote weight loss.

The research study was conducted on 632 patients, all with Type 2 diabetes. During the 26-week trial process, the participants were randomly grouped. They were given daily oral semaglutide, weekly injectable semaglutide, and placebo.

At the end of the study, those who received oral semaglutide had a reduction in their HbA1c level by -7% to -1.9%. Those who received injectable semaglutide had a -1.9% reduction in their HbA1c levels. On the other hand, those who received placebo only had a minimal reduction in their HbA1c level by -0.3%.

Of those who received semaglutide, 90% of them achieved their target HbA1c levels at the end of the trial. Interestingly, 71% of them also had a reduction in their weight by as much as 5%.

Is this the cure for Type 2 diabetes?

More studies are needed on this new anti-diabetic drug, semaglutide. The study was limited to only 26 weeks, so its safety profile for long-term use also needs to be assessed.

The team also stated that the new drug should be tested on patients with higher HbA1c levels as well to see if it will also work on patients with less-controlled blood sugar and HbA1c levels.

However, the results of the trial are promising. If the next phases show the same results, we just might have the wonder drug for Type 2 diabetics.
