International starlet Salma Hayek is accomplished actress, but when asked what her greatest achievement is, Hayak made no mention of the illustrious work she has done in front of the game, what she’s truly proud of was becoming a mom. The celebrity and her husband Francois-Henri Pinault became parents when the 41-year-old Hayak gave birth to a daughter, Valentina, in 2007 following a difficult pregnancy.

I got gestational diabetes, Hayak explained during an interview, which I didn’t realize at first.” It occurs in women who have high blood sugar levels during pregnancy. I didn’t know whether I was feeling bad because I was pregnant or whether something was seriously wrong. I was nauseated for nine months, which can be one of the symptoms.”
Hayak, whose family has a history of the disease, complained of putting on a massive amount of weight, but she confessed that it was a price she was willing to pay to have a child. She was aware of the risks that the disease presented her unborn child. “You don’t know if it is going to be born healthy, you are completely out of control.”

Women usually get tested for gestational diabetes when they are between 24 and 28 weeks into their pregnancy. Women who have a family of history of diabetes are usually tested earlier. Although gestational diabetes only continues through pregnancy it does put a woman at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes down the road.
