Tyler McClellan won’t let type 1 diabetes keep him down. The 39-year-old British Columbia man who was diagnosed with the disease at the age of 14 is competing in his first ironman.

McClellan admits that competing in an ironman competition is a huge challenge.

A member of the team of type 1 diabetics called Riding on Insulin,  who raise money for children dealing with the disease. McClellan admits that competing in an ironman competition is a huge challenge. Unable to determine how his body will react to the gruelling race, he acknowledges that he was stop every half hour to check his glucose levels.

McClellan is signed up for a race in Wisconsin on September 11 and will be joined by 49 other Riding on Insulin teammates including two other competitors from Canada.
