Do Natural Health Products Prevent Diabetes?

In recent years, pharmacological treatments have suffered a drop in popularity. While pills are accused of causing harmful side effects and are too costly for both patients and the health care system, dietary supplements are enjoying a massive boom. These “natural” health products are often perceived as a safer alternative to drugs and a hard shield against debilitating diseases.

But are dietary supplements all they are cracked up to be?

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health ((NCCIH – NIH) states that the current available data is insufficient to make any claim regarding the effect of dietary supplements on the prevention and the management of type 2 diabetes. Moreover, they warn people with diabetes to consult their physician before taking any supplements since some side effects may affect the kidneys or mess with their diabetes. Considering that diabetes may pave the way to kidney problems, consumers are urged to be mindful.

Sure, popping pills, be it a dietary supplements or drugs, seems like the easy solution to dodge diabetes. However, regular physical activity and a healthy diet exert far more wonders on the body at a cheaper cost, with tons of studies supporting their benefits.

If you are interested in trying out any supplement, we invite you to consult with your health care provider and to be attentive to changes related to your health following the intake.
