Diabetes & Hyperglycemia – Signs that Scream 911

Even when you’re doing a good job at managing diabetes, it only takes one slip from your part, and you can end up in a hospital bed. That’s how infuriating diabetes can be.

If you’re like me, you’re the kind of person who avoids doctors and hospitals like a plague. (Who doesn’t, right?) However, there are situations when calling 911 is your best bet at saving your life—even if it means possibly spending long hours in the ER before being attended to.

Here are 5 911-scenarios. Take action before things start to take a nasty turn!

#1. High Blood Sugar (Hyperglycemia) – Testing Results

If your blood sugar is higher than 14 mmol/L, and there are either (1) ketones in your urine; (2) ketones in the blood (> 1.5 mmol/L), dial the emergency number.

For people with type 1 diabetes, call 911 if your blood sugar soars beyond 20 mmol/L with the presence of hyperglycemic symptoms. Those suffering from type 2 diabetes should do the same if they feel drowsy and their glycemia is superior to 25 mmol/L.

#2. High Blood Sugar (Hyperglycemia) – Signs

If you experience any of the following symptoms, you might want to hit the emergency call.  Of course, testing your blood sugar with a glucometer will help you confirm the diagnosis of hyperglycemia. In the meantime, stay well hydrated to lower your blood sugar. If you have insulin on hand, inject yourself with the proper dose as discussed with your healthcare team (you should know this!).

  • Thirst
  • Drowsiness
  • Palpitations
  • Fruity breath
  • Unconscious (yeah, definitely call 911 if this happens!)

#3. Vomiting Your Gut Out

#4. Change in the Mental State

#5. Burning up

You need medical attention if your body temperature is maintained at 38.5°C (or above) for the last 2 days.

Stay safe!
