Bananas Need To Be Banned from Breakfast

Banana is the breakfast food that most of us grew up loving. Whether it is blended in a smoothie, topped on oatmeal, or whirled in a yogurt, banana is easily one of the most favorite fruits in the world.

However, with fame come haters. As I was scrolling through my FB newsfeed, a post by Delish titled Why You Shouldn’t Eat Banana For Breakfast grabbed my attention. According to Dr. Daryl Gioffre, a nutritionist and chiropractor, “bananas eaten alone aren’t the best option because they’re 25% sugar and moderately acidic.”

The Truth

  1. All fruits contain carbohydrates, the macronutrient that can raise your blood sugar. However, combining them with a source of fat and protein can help to steady the rise of glycemia.
  2. Of course, eating banana alone for breakfast won’t be enough to keep you going for the whole morning. Be sure to include a source of carb and protein for a well-balanced breakfast.
  3. There is still much debate surrounding the alkaline diet. Long story short, the body does a pretty good job at maintaining the pH of the blood in the normal range (7.35-7.45). It is unlikely that eating banana is enough to cause your blood to become acid. Instead, it is more plausible for your diet as a whole to cause your blood to go out its pH range, given that the alkaline diet is valid.

Moral of the story: Further evidence is needed to support the acid-alkaline diet fully.
