4 Diabetes “Cures” to Steer Clear Of

Diabetes is a hot research topic. As rates of diagnosis climb steadily higher in countless countries around the world, researchers are taking notice and working diligently to find not only the root causes of diabetes but cures and more effective methods of management as well.

Admittedly, not all avenues that can relieve symptoms of diabetes must come from a physician—diet and exercise, for instance, are largely in the hands of the diabetes patient—but some companies and individuals have taken advantage of the massive market for diabetes cures, promising wild results and unrealistic achievements. Many of these so-called cures do have wonderful properties that make them a useful tool in management but are not cures for the condition.

#1. Supplements

Supplements can be extremely helpful in managing your diabetes and diabetes symptoms. Cinnamon pills, for instance, have a demonstrable effect on blood sugar and can be a great addition to your overall medication regimen.

Any supplement promising dramatic results, such as drastic weight loss in a short period, miraculously get rid of blood sugar highs, or even magically lowered blood pressure, temper your expectations. Supplements are not entirely harmless and should not be taken without a doctor’s permission.

You do not have to avoid supplements altogether, of course, but they should be taken with careful consideration.

#2. Oxygen Treatments

Oxygen treatments have been proven to be useful for damaged tissue and blood vessels. Aside from this specific use, however, oxygen chambers and dedicated treatments should not be used as a cure-all for diabetes. If your blood oxygen levels are low or you have nerve or tissue damage, you will likely require more drastic therapy and interventions.

#3. Saunas

Some sauna companies have released claims regarding chronic illness, suggesting that regular use of a sauna will cure ailments ranging from chronic pain to diabetes and digestive disorders. Saunas may contribute to overall health and wellness but are not capable of reversing a condition like diabetes.

Saunas can actually be harmful to individuals with diabetes as excessive sweating can deplete your body of much-needed vitamins and minerals and may adversely affect your glucose levels. If you do employ a sauna for wellness, make sure to adjust your medication dosage accordingly.

#4. High-Fat Oils

Oils have taken on the role of cure-all for many conditions, not only diabetes. Some people claim that high-fat oils such as coconut oil are nothing short of magic in their ability to cure the body of ailments. Again, while there may be some validity to the nutritional claims made for certain oils, oils can also be problematic for diabetes patients who struggle to keep dietary fat levels low.

There are many avenues on the road to managing your diabetes, but being healthy and having diabetes means just that: managing your condition, not chasing unproven and potentially dangerous “cures.”
