3 Ways Diabetics Can Stay Healthy at the Office

Everyone needs to work to earn money and survive. However, those long hours spent on the clock can affect your health. Office workers, in particular, tend to spend too much time in their chairs and eating lunch out of the vending machine. This can make anyone put on weight and potentially impacts their health, which can lead to issues like heart disease. It’s an even worse issue for diabetics, who may already be overweight and are more prone to heart problems.

However, being productive at work need not interfere with your ability to stay healthy! Let’s take a look at some tips!

#1 Pack Healthy Snacks

Since there is any number of unhealthy temptations at work, including vending machines, cafes, and fast food places, you should bring along a bagged lunch. This allows you to pick high protein, low carb meals and snacks to munch on ahead of time.

#2 Find a Place to Check Your Blood Sugars

Locate a private area at work where you can test your blood glucose levels before lunch. Most people feel a little strange about testing their blood in front of others. However, you shouldn’t skip this essential part of your diabetes management plan. If you don’t have an office, look for an unused conference room or even ask for permission to head out to your car to check privately.

#3 Move Throughout the Day

Sitting for long periods of time is one of the major risk factors for heart disease and diabetes. Even if you work out regularly, the eight hours you sit at the office can still do a lot of damage. The key is simply getting up and moving around often. Consider taking a break every 10 to 20 minutes or so. Simply standing from your chair to walk a message to a co-worker rather than sending an email is good enough. You can also space out printing tasks, take a lap around the office, or go check in with the boss.
