#1 Nuts Are the Best!

These small protein-packed fuel nuggets are great for diabetics to snack on. All types of edible tree nuts are beneficial, helping to slow digestion and make you feel full for longer. Plus, nuts contain unsaturated fats, omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and Vitamin E.

#2 Melons Are the Best!

Although melons are sweet, they are a good choice for diabetics. A melon is composed mostly of water, which doesn’t add a lot of calories and helps hydrate you. That light sweetness helps satisfy your craving for dessert too. Plus, melons contain Vitamin C and A.

#3 Tea is the Best!

Feeling a little thirsty? Don’t grab another soda. Make up some tea to sip on. This plant infusion contains tons of antioxidants which are helpful for the immune system and appear to reduce the risk of heart disease! It’s recommended that you drink between five to six cups of freshly brewed tea daily.

#1 Fruit Juice is the Worst!

While it’s okay and even good for diabetics to eat whole fruit, just drinking the juice is another matter. This liquid contains all of the sugar of fruit, but none of the fiber that helps slow down digestion. So, when you drink a glass of orange juice the sugar hits your bloodstream all at once.

#2 White Bread is the Worst!

Refined white flour, such as is found in store-bought white bread, also digests quickly. When your body breaks it down, your glucose levels rise rapidly. Plus, a lot of fiber has been removed from white flour, which isn’t good for your digestive tract either.

#3 Alcohol is the Worst!

While it’s okay for a diabetic to have a glass of wine or other alcoholic drink from time to time, this beverage can rapidly affect glucose levels. Alcohol in moderate amounts raises blood sugar, but large quantities can cause blood sugar levels to drop dangerously low. It also stimulates the appetite and lowers willpower, so you may be less inclined to make wise food choices.
