Diabetics Can Enjoy These Tasty Treats From the Grill This Summer

The summer season is upon us. Nothing celebrates it better than grilling some great food and spending the day with the family.

However, finding healthy foods to grill is essential for diabetics.

It’s way too easy to put on the pounds, raise the blood sugars and the triglycerides with traditional cookout foods. Treat yourself better, while still enjoying the flavors of these light and filling alternatives.

#1 Grilled Fish Steaks

Most people think of the deep-fried sticks when they think fish, but it can also be a hearty steak. Consider a trout filet, swordfish, or salmon instead of beef or pork this summer. It tastes great with herbs and seasonings too. A little salt, pepper, and lemon juice pair perfectly with most fish.

#2 Veggie Kabobs

The smells of fresh peppers and onions are enough to get anyone’s mouth salivating. Make up some vegetable skewers for your sides with both along with any other vegetables you like. Consider veggies that are sturdy, but don’t require a lot of cooking. These can include:

  • mushrooms
  • broccoli
  • zucchini
  • tomatoes

#3 Salsas

Fatty dressings, like mayonnaise, are common at a cookout. But, they load up the calories and fat. Instead, opt for healthy, vegetable based salsas. You can mix things up with a few different varieties. Everyone is familiar with tomato salsa. Green or ‘Verde’ salsa is a tangy alternative. Or, you can go with a protein-packed bean and corn salsa. These can be served with chips or used as topping on your fish and grilled veggies.

#4 Grilled Fruits

Stay away from the pure sugar in popsicles and ice cream for dessert. You’ll have a lot more fun grilling some fresh fruit to eat after the main course. Grilling fruit helps caramelize some of the sugars within creating a super sweet taste with soft and crunchy textures. Try grilling pineapple, peaches, watermelon, figs, or even apricots.
