Why Doctor Visits Are Important for Diabetics

Are you one of those people who try not to go to the doctors every single time? Annual doctor visits are highly recommended. A recent study has found that many Americans with type 2 diabetes are unaware of their diabetes as they do not have any form of health care. Compared to individuals who have been hospitalized or have a positive family history of diabetes, they were more likely to be aware that they have the condition.
In a study conducted in Maryland, United States, individuals who have not visited their doctor for a year or more are six times more likely to be unaware of their diabetes (given that they do it). Middle-age and older adults also had a higher chance of being unaware of their health condition compared to their younger peers. Based on ethnicity, Asians were 44% less likely to be aware if they have diabetes.

The biggest contributor to the lack of awareness of type 2 diabetes is the disparity in access to medical care leading to delayed diagnosis and slower initiation of treatment. It also reduces the ability for patients to control their blood sugar.

The diagnosis of diabetes is crucial as it allows ongoing care for patients to prevent devastating wreckage from uncontrolled diabetes. Diabetic complications include neuropathy (damaged nerves), nephropathy (damaged kidneys), and retinopathy (damaged eyes).

Patients should visit their healthcare professional at least once per year. Screening tests and examinations can be done to help them control their blood glucose. Based on the results, the health care team can adjust the dosage for medications; verify patient compliance to lifestyle habits regarding food, sleep, and exercise; and manage any complications that may result due to long-term diabetes.

During these visits, the time can also be used wisely for patient education and answering questions.
