This Common Food Helps Diabetes Control

The right kind of fat can help you control your diabetes. A study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that keeping a diet with a fat found in nuts such as walnuts, can help keep type 2 diabetes under control.

The article title “Long-term effects of increased dietary polyunsaturated fat from walnuts on metabolic parameters in type 2 diabetes” was led by Linda Tapsell, the Director of the Smart Foods Centre at the University of Wollongong in New South Whales, Australia.

Eating low fat foods is good, but including key foods that deliver the right fats is important

For the study, 50 overweight, diabetic, non-insulin treated adults followed a balanced low-fat diet with the Center for a year. The researchers found the group given 30 grams (1.05 oz) of walnuts per day had more good fats in their diets, as opposed to the group that was on low-fat diet alone. Furthermore, the walnut group also improved insulin levels.

Both groups had healthy diets. However, the walnut group had more unsaturated fats than the control. The effects of the diet were seen in the first three months.

Whole food is food that has been modified or processed as little as possible and is free from external substances. As whole foods, walnuts provide fiber, vitamin E and other substances with antioxidant activity.

The term “balanced diet” is not a loose term. Eating low-fat foods is good, but including key foods that deliver the right fats is important.
