Sugar Up Your Sex Life

Diabetics, rejoice.

A recent article published in the Journal of Diabetes and Its Complications shed light on the diet fix that could be the key to a better sex life for diabetic people with sexual dysfunction.

The team of researchers from Italy followed participants who were newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes for several years. Participants were put on either a low-fat diet or the Mediterranean diet. The results from the study led to an interesting finding. Parameters that were used to characterize sexual function suffered a lesser decline in patients who followed a Mediterranean diet.

“Among persons with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes, a Mediterranean diet reduced the deterioration of sexual function over time in both sexes”, suggested the authors.

Dietitian’s Input

Rest assured. This is not a fad diet. Several studies have consistently shown the myriad of benefits of this star player diet in heart disease, diabetes, and other health ailments.

The Mediterranean diet is characterized by:

  • High consumption of fruits, vegetables, and legumes
  • High monounsaturated fat-to-saturated fat ratio
  • Moderate consumption of red wine
  • Low consumption of red meat and processed meat
  • Daily consumption of low-fat dairy products
  • Daily consumption of cereals (mainly whole grains)
