How To Pick the Best Lotion for Diabetic Skin

Dry, itchy skin can drive a diabetic crazy with irritation and the urge to scratch. Not to mention how ratty it can make you feel.

Keep your skin hydrated and supple with regular application of a good skin lotion.

#1 Look for Thicker Creams

Lotion is a lightweight moisturizer that may not keep your skin protected or hydrated well enough. If you find that lotion isn’t doing the job, consider getting a cream or even an ointment. Both of these are available over-the-counter. They are basically moisturizers with thicker consistency and longer lasting skin protectants. Stick with products labeled “noncomedogenic” or “nonacnegenic.” These don’t block the skin’s pores, which helps prevent acne breakouts.

#2 Look for Humectants & Emollients

These are ingredients that can be found in different lotions and creams. Humectants draw moisture to the skin from the surrounding environment. They include:

  • honey
  • aloe vera gel
  • glycerin

Emollients are ingredients that create a protective barrier over the skin. These include oils like:

  • coconut
  • sunflower
  • jojoba
  • grape seed
  • petroleum jelly

#3 Avoid Fragrances

If you can, use a product that doesn’t contain any fragrances. These can irritate dry, sensitive skin and interfere with blood glucose test results. If you tend to use a lot of lotion on your hands, this can be a problem. Those who absolutely love nice smelling skin creams may want to compromise by getting a body butter for all over and a fragrance-free cream for their hands.

#4 Use a Foot Cream

A diabetic’s foot is also prone to problems, some of which are dry skin, hardening of the skin, and splitting and cracking. Without care and treatment, these issues can develop into wounds over time. A good diabetic foot cream helps keep the skin soft, hydrated, and gently lifts away the dead surface layers of skin. You’ll want one that contains urea, to hydrate and exfoliate, and lactic acid to soften and exfoliate.
