How to Make Exercise Fun for Diabetic Children

Let’s admit it. If you’re going to tell your child that he needs to exercise to control his blood sugar levels, then I bet it’s going to be tough implementing that exercise regimen.

Today’s plugged-in world also isn’t helping. The gadgets and computer games keep him inside when he needs to be outside enjoying fresh air and getting a good workout.

But your diabetic child needs exercise, so as a parent, it’s up to you to make the activity fun and to engage that he’ll want to commit to the routine.

A family that plays sports together stays healthy together.

Your diabetic child is not the only one who will benefit from a good exercise program but the whole family as well, especially if you and your partner also have diabetes. So why not make his exercise program a daily routine for everyone?

If you have a large yard, you can group yourselves into two and play popular sports like basketball and baseball. Not only will all the family members get a good exercise from these activities but it will also help your child get interested in sports as well.

It’s important that you don’t make your child feel singled out because of his diabetes, and playing sports is a good way to make him feel he’s in control of his medical problem.

An hour a day of brisk walking keeps the doctor away.

Nothing can you feel more awake and energized in the morning than a brisk walk around the neighborhood. So if you have some time to spare before your child goes to school, you can go on a 30-minute brisk walk around the neighborhood and another 30-minute brisk walk later in the afternoon.

If you’re pressed for time, then you can do the walk in the afternoon before the sun sets. You can even bring your dog if you have one since your pet can also benefit from the exercise!

The important thing to remember is that your diabetic child should get to have at least an hour of moderate (even vigorous) physical activities each day.

A family that enjoys weekend activities makes life more interesting.

Weekends should be spent with your family, so these days are the best days to do something fun together. You can go swimming, hiking, fishing, biking around the neighborhood, and even playing in the park or local playground.

Get your child interested in physical activities. Not only can this help manage his diabetes but prevent diabetes complications as well. Plus, these activities are a good bonding experience with your child.
