Foods Diabetics Should Avoid At That Summer BBQ!

Lazy weekend outings and explosive celebrations are a big part of summer. Along with these activities comes enough food to feed an army. Much of it is unique to the season, and some of it is bad for diabetics.

Of course, the general idea of staying away from fatty, sugary foods is easy to keep in mind but usually hard to apply in practice.

So, how can you do it?

If you frequently find yourself overwhelmed by a smorgasbord of treats at BBQs and picnics, try just remembering a few things to avoid. Everything else is fair game, in moderation.

5 Foods To Avoid This Summer

There are a lot of fattening, sugar-spiking things you’ll find at warm weather events. Let’s take a look at some commonly served items.

#1. Beef Burgers

A grill is rarely seen without a few beef patties cooking on it. While burgers, especially bacon cheeseburgers, taste great, they are loaded with fat and calories. A plain cheeseburger can contain up to 750 calories and 45 grams of fat.

#2. Ice Cream

Don’t cry over frozen milk! Your ice cream is hurting you with pure sugar and fat. A half-cup serving of vanilla ice cream can contain about 21 grams of sugar and 170 calories. Don’t assume that frozen yogurt will have less of an impact on your glucose levels either. It can contain as much or slightly more sugar per serving to counter the normal sour taste of yogurt.

#3. Nachos and Cheese

Walking around a park and eating from a paper container of cheesy nachos is a skill that takes years to master. Sadly, nachos contain lots of fat from the oil that the tortilla chips are fried in and the cheese sauce topping. They can boast up to 692 calories and 38 grams fat.

#4. Coleslaw

Cold salads, like coleslaw, are full of fat. “But, it’s made from cabbage! That’s healthy, isn’t it?” you might say. Ergo, you are likely getting healthful nutrients from the cabbage. Unfortunately, the mayonnaise added to this recipe can bump up to amount of fat. Coleslaw can hide 8 grams of fat per half cup serving.

#5. Fried Chicken

Hello, old friend. We meet again. Fried chicken is something that everyone has had at a party, picnic or just for dinner. It’s hard to stay away from this but try. A piece of fried chicken breast can contain 361 calories and 21 grams of fat.
