Are Eggs Good for Diabetics?

You may be wondering if it’s okay to continue eating eggs with a diabetes diagnosis. These high-protein snacks are great for filling the appetite and are an excellent breakfast food. However, the yolk contains cholesterol.

Safe to Eat?

The typical large egg contains about 200 milligrams (mg) of cholesterol. However, the daily intake of cholesterol for diabetics is recommended to be no more than 200 mg.

It is possible to eat more if you use only the egg whites in your recipes, as there isn’t any cholesterol in this part of an egg. For instance, you may make a two egg omelet and remove the yolk from one of your eggs.

Any Benefits to Eggs?

Even if consumption of eggs should be limited, there are benefits to making them a part of your weekly diet. Eggs only contain 0.5 grams of carbohydrates, so they won’t raise your blood sugar levels, and about 7 grams of protein per large egg. Protein is great for giving your body energy during the day and keep you feeling full for longer. Lastly, they are loaded with many helpful nutrients, like potassium, biotin, and lutein. The eggs of pasture-raised chickens contain omega-3 fatty acids too.

Other nutrients found in eggs include:

  • lecithin
  • selenium
  • zinc
  • iron
  • copper
  • vitamins A
  • vitamin D
  • vitamin E
  • vitamin K
  • vitamin D
  • vitamin B2
  • vitamin B6
  • vitamin B12

Basically, an egg contains a little bit of everything needed to grow a healthy body. When you think about it, that does make sense.
