Have Diabetes and Need Renovations? There May Be a Grant For You

If you’ve grown up a home maven, completing repairs and tackling projects with gusto, it might come with a lot of frustration to be unable to repair or work on your home. Due to potential nerve damage, dizziness, or high blood pressure, however, you may not be capable of completing your home project and even require special assistance. Installing your disability equipment can be costly and difficult, but grants exist to help men and women with diabetes out.

That’s right: Grants for house!

What Does a Home Repair Grant Look Like?

Typically, a home repair grant is awarded to someone who has either been recommended by someone else or who has applied themselves. People who are eligible must provide evidence that repairs (or additions) are needed and that they do not have the money or ability to complete the tasks. A grant is then given as a form of charity, and the recipient can take the money from the grant and put it toward repairs or the installation of disability aids. For most men and women with diabetes, disability aids come in the form of ramps to place over stairs and chairs and railing installed in showers and bathrooms.

Grants will vary from place to place, but virtually all grants have strict stipulations, and all instructions must be followed to the letter. Otherwise, you risk having to pay the grant back. Unlike a loan, grants are usually donated and are not required to be repaid in any form.

How to Find a Grant

Grants can be both privately and publicly funded. A grant for a disabled person would first and foremost require proof that the person in question is disabled (a diagnosis or doctor’s note, at minimum), and that the need is great. Publicly funded grants can be found through your state’s housing administration and may be viewed or applied for through your state’s website.

Private grants are also typically found online. Some hospitals have grants available as do local community organizations. To find a private grant, start with your local YMCA or community center and continue casting a net wider to encompass other local private and public organizations aimed at assisting for either the elderly or the disabled.
