Diabetes & Diet: What are the Benefits of Grapes?

Many diabetics know that drinking fruit juice is an easy way to raise blood sugar levels quickly, which can have benefits for those who are prone to hypoglycemia. However, it’s usually better to eat whole fruits, like grapes, over drinking their juices each day. These berries have extra fiber that helps slow down digestion and make you feel full for longer. This way you don’t get a sugar spike and then end up feeling hungry fifteen to twenty minutes later.

Of course, there are other more specific reasons for eating grapes.

#1 Grapes Contain Antioxidants

Red grape skins are high in a certain kind of antioxidant called, resveratrol, which can help reduce oxidative stress that contributes to diabetes complications. There is also some research that indicates resveratrol may help prevent the signs of aging. A nice bonus for anyone, right?

#2 Good for Heart Health

The compounds in grapes may also be good for your heart, which is important as diabetics are at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Resveratrol helps promote heart health. Quercetin is a natural anti-inflammatory. It may prevent atherosclerosis and protect against damage caused by LDL cholesterol. Soluble fiber in grapes also helps clear out your arteries, and potassium supports heart and circulatory health.

#3 Reduce the Chance of Developing Diabetes

Research published in the BMJ in 2013, indicates that eating certain types of whole fruits may lower your risk of developing diabetes by up to 7%. These fruits included:

  • Grapes
  • Raisins
  • Blueberries
  • Apples
  • Pears

#4 Protect Against Diabetic Neuropathy

Animal studies have also indicated that resveratrol may also help protect against and reduce some diabetic neuropathy. In particular, the antioxidant was able to reduce the effects and damage of neural changes that are associated with neuropathy.
