Could Diabetes and Alzheimer’s Be Treated With The Same Drug?

Alzheimer’s diseases is a progressive mental deterioration that may happen in middle or old age. The cause of it is a degeneration of the brain and is the most common cause of senility. According to the CDC, an estimated 5.4 million Americans have this irreversible disease. It is the sixth leading cause of death among adults and the fifth among people aged 65 or older.

Researchers from the University of Aberdeen have published in the journal Diabetologia results that show a new link between diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. The study, led by Dr. Bettina Platt and Dr. Mirela Delibergovic, also reported that Alzheimer’s disease can lead to diabetes, instead of the inverse, which was previously thought for a long time. The peer-reviewed article explains that dementia complications can lead to alterations in glucose management and finally diabetes.

The study also noted that type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease are so closely related that drugs currently used to manage diabetes may also mitigate the progression of Alzheimer’s disesase.

To come to this conclusion, a model was developed to for Alzheimer’s disease. The model showed that increased levels of a gene involved in the production of toxic proteins led to the development of Alzheimer’s disease symptoms and the development of type 2 diabetes symptoms.
