Processed Meats and Diabetes: Set Aside Your Sandwich Meats

Red meat is frequently identified as the source of numerous health problems, ranging from heart disease to high blood pressure and diabetes. Although these claims are not erroneous, the manner in which they are studied has been shown to be less than effective.

While the studies in question did measure people’s red meat intake, they failed to differentiate between high-quality meat sources and low-quality sources such as packaged, processed meats. Because the two were not separated, good quality red meat was lumped in with the “unhealthy” or “dangerous” category when it may not have belonged there.

Red Meat Versus Processed Red Meat

To begin, consuming massive amounts of red meat is still not recommended, nor is consuming low-quality, high-fat meat. A study found, however, that a diet rich in red meat was not the source of health problems developing, but that processed red meat was the root of numerous health issues. Processed meat includes hot dogs, sausage, and lunchmeat, all of which are filled with additives and preservatives.

Additives and preservatives, on their own, can be problematic, but a review of some luncheon meats actually found mold and other toxic substances, which could be the source of health issues. Packaged and processed meats often contain oils and sugars, as well, neither of which will be found in a cut of lean steak, for instance, or a pair of pork chops.

The study concluded that quality red meat did not lead to an increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes, but that a diet high in processed red meat did. The next time you want to reach for a few slices of pepperoni or slap a big slab of ham onto your sandwich, opt for a thin-cut steak or a piece of roasted ham instead.

Eating Processed Meat

Although you do not have to cut your favorite roast beef out of your diet entirely, regular, habitual consumption of processed red meats including deli meats, hot dogs, and sausage can increase your risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. As such, they should not constitute a regular part of your diet but should be seen as an occasional item, perhaps on a day when you are pressed for time.

If you must use processed meats, opt for meats that are free of fillers and try to partake of 100% meat products rather than pressed or reconstituted food.
