5 Summer Treats Diabetics Can Eat to Satisfy Their Sweet Tooth

It’s hard not to snack on something sweet at summer events. Ice cream at the zoo. Jello at a picnic. Even when you’re sitting on the front porch, you may feel a craving for something sweet.

There’s no need to fight those urges any longer.

You can celebrate the summer as much as you like with a few of these guilt-free sweet treats.

#1 No-Sugar Popsicle

We all remember running after the ice cream truck as children every single summer. Popsicles were among the most flavorful and cheapest treats available on the menu. As an adult, you can relive those memories with a yummy, no sugar pop. There are many brands that offer low-sugar and artificially sweetened popsicles for your sampling.

#2 Fresh Berries

Nothing says summer like freshly picked (or purchased) berries. You’ll probably be okay with just about any berry but stick to about 1/4 cup per serving. Try blueberries for a sharp burst of sweetness and some healthy anthocyanins.

#3 Sugar-Free Gelatin

Jello molds can often be seen at summer picnics, but they are full of sugar. If you love this brightly colored, gelatinous snack, try switching to a sugar-free version. You’ll still enjoy the look, texture, and flavor, with less of an impact on your glucose levels. Just remember to check for maltodextrin on the label. This ingredient can sometimes raise your blood sugar levels without you realizing it.

#4 Fruit Kebabs

When grilling out this year, put together a few fruity kebabs to have after the main course. These can be filled with slices of apple, orange, strawberries, and use blueberries as stoppers on the ends. To give yourself an extra treat, serve with a drizzle of chocolate sauce.

#5 Sun Tea

This homemade tea is a fun thing to prepare before any meal. Just fill up a clean, clear jar with water and several tea bags. Then, let it sit in the sun for a few hours. Enhance your drink with a few slices of fruit such as oranges and a sprig of mint. It’s a great alternative to sweet teas and sodas.
