5 Stress-Relieving Hobbies for Diabetes

Diabetes comes with a unique set of requirements. Some chronic illnesses are relatively straightforward regarding both treatments and symptoms, but diabetes comes with a slew of possible complications and symptoms that are largely unique to each individual diabetic. The stress of learning how to navigate your body’s makeup and response to having diabetes can be overwhelming, which can then lead to additional complications.

Because diabetes can be difficult to manage and figure out, developing stress management techniques is important. To create safe, effective stress management, make sure all of your options are gentle on your circulation, legs, and blood sugar—this is not the time for developing a high-sugar baking habit or trying your hand at skydiving.

Low-Stress, Stress Relief Hobbies

#1. Knitting

Knitting has been compared to meditation, in that it requires you to focus your attention on the task at hand, rather than doing something absentmindedly. Focusing your mind on a single task can help alleviate stress. As a bonus, knitting helps with the dexterity of your fingers and can be done in virtually any setting without a lot of difficulties, including a train commute, living room couch, or university lounge.

#2. Painting

Painting, coloring, and drawing are all creative endeavors that have proven track records in reducing stress. The important thing to remember is that this work is entirely for you; you do not need to compare your work to the work of others, or even ever show anyone your creations. Paint to promote self-expression and reduce tension in your life.

#3. Cooking

Cooking is not only a great stress reliever but also a wonderful money saver and a way to make sure you are eating healthy, whole foods. Start small with cooking; purchase only what you need, not what you want, and create your meals accordingly. Fresh ingredients are typically richer in flavor, anyway.

#4. Writing

Writing and journaling are two excellent ways to reduce stress. Jotting down your thoughts, your fears or even your stress can get the anxiety and fear out of your body and mind and onto paper, which allows you to breathe freely and move forward—or even create a plan of action.

#5. Gardening

Finally, gardening has demonstrated anti-stress benefits. A combination of sunshine, getting your hands into the earth, and caring for plants helps your body let go and unwind, with the possible benefit of having healthy, delicious food to eat at the end of the gardening season.

Whatever your particular outlet for stress, making sure you set aside time to de-stress and unwind will make managing your diabetes much easier. Your body cannot function properly and optimally when anxiety is given free reign, and a diabetic body requires a bit of additional help. Using simple, easy unwinding routines can help you manage your diabetes and your overall health.
