5 kg of Broccoli Slashes Blood Sugar

I know, 5 kg sounds like a lot of brocollyto eat in one sitting, right? Can you imagine? Don’t worry, it’s not what you’re thinking.

We’re often told to eat our greens. In fact, we write a lot about it in this blog, becuase it is actually very important to eat your greens like your mother told you. However, soon doctors could be prescribing broccoli.

A group or researchers created a powder that is composed of broccoli extract. This extract reduced blood sugar levels by up to 10% in people with diabetes.

Sulforaphane, a chemical found in broccoli sprouts, had been demostrated to reduce glucose levels in diabetic rats. Anders Rosengren, a researcher in the University of Gothemburg in Sweden, wondered if it would be the same for humans. To test this theory, nearly 100 people with type 2 diabetes were given a dose of sulforaphane everyday for three months. After the experimental period concluded, it was shown that their condition was controlled relatively well without taking diabetes medication.

Jus how much sulforaphane was given to them? The concentration of sulforaphane was about 100 times that found in broccoli, or the equivalent of 5 kg of the vegetable.
