5 Diabetic “Super” Snacks That Are Easy To Whip Up!

Diabetics have a hard enough time with meal planning. Trying to find healthy snacks that they can nosh on when feeling a bit peckish only increases the difficulty of controlling blood sugar levels. Well, if you have problems figuring out what to snack on between meals, it helps to put together a list of healthy options to refer to ahead of time.

But, you can take this one step further with a list of superfoods that are not only safe, but also help control your diabetes, improve your blood sugar levels, or fight inflammation!

#1 Salads

Yes, they are almost a cliche by now. However, salads are fast and easy to prepare, especially if you look for those convenient mixes. The best options are ones featuring dark leafy greens, which contain plenty of the antioxidants, Vitamin C, lutein, and zeaxanthin.

#2 Garlic Bread

Now, bread does contain simple carbohydrates that can elevate blood sugar levels. However, a small slice or two of homemade garlic bread can provide some great benefits. Garlic is a fragrant root bulb that also has anti-inflammatory properties, reduces blood sugar, and LDL cholesterol. Instead of slathering butter on your bread, coat it with a little extra virgin olive oil. This healthy fat contains antioxidants, helps you feel fuller, and improves cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

#3 Berry Smoothies

If you are feeling a craving for something sweet, make a quick berry smoothie with blueberries or strawberries. Berries are great for diabetics as they have fiber and plant antioxidants, like anthocyanins, that can reduce inflammation and fight heart disease.

#4 Nuts

A handful of mixed nuts is tasty, satisfies that mid-afternoon hunger, and is good for you. Nuts contain protein and carbs that supply energy for several hours. Many also contain Omega-3 Fatty Acids, which are anti-inflammatory.

#5 Steamed Broccoli

Broccoli is very low calorie and also contains the lutein and zeaxanthin. There is also evidence that it helps lower insulin levels in the body. You can have this green veg with just some salt, pepper, lemon juice, and a drizzle of olive oil, or you may want to cheat a little and add some cheese sauce.
