4 Tips for Dealing with Diabetic Skin

For many diabetics, one of the more irritating, annoying complications is itchy, dry skin. This problem can develop even when the disease hasn’t progressed very far.

There are multiple reasons for skin problems. When blood sugar levels are high, the body tries to flush some of the excess out in urine. This means that diabetics go to the bathroom more often and can get dehydrated. Poor circulation caused by long-term damage from high glucose means fewer nutrients and oxygen can get to the skin. Diabetes can hinder the immune system, and you could develop an infection that leaves you with itching and redness.

Ways Of Soothing Dry Skin

Of course, the best way to keep this from happening is to maintain a balanced diet and keep your blood sugar levels under control. If you still have dry, sensitive skin, there are a few ways you can soothe your symptoms.

#1 Wear Loose Comfortable Clothing

Soft, smooth cloth feels best on irritated skin. Cotton, silk, rayon, and linen are all good choices. Also, look for loose clothing with few creases, tags, or folds that can further irritate.

#2 Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Many products that other people wouldn’t think twice about using can cause further itching and pain in someone with skin issues. Look for mild soaps and moisturizers without fragrances or added chemicals. An oatmeal soap or lotion can also help soothe redness and irritation.

#3 Take Short, Cool Baths and Showers

Don’t stand in a hot shower for a long period. Stick to shorter 5 to 10-minute showers with warm water at the most. Hot water can actually cause the skin to dry out even more. Plus, a diabetic with neuropathy may have a hard time determining whether the water is hot enough to burn.

#4 Protect Skin From the Sun

This doesn’t mean avoid going out in the sun or enjoying a day on the beach. Instead, find yourself a good suntan lotion and wear it year-round. Tanning can further damage skin, and if you get a sunburn, it could potentially take longer to heal with an impaired immune system.
