3 Bad Habits Diabetics Need to Nix

Why are bad habits bad?

Much like why delicious food is unhealthy, I’ve long given up on finding the answer to this existentialist question. Instead, let’s just dive right into the 3 bad habits that most people, diabetic or not, are guilty of.

#1. Binge Watching

Let’s be real: Netflix and other similar networks are one of the greatest TV-related inventions of all time. I can binge watch the whole day, 7-hour straight, no joke. Yet, that same 7-hour spent at work seems to be eternal. Don’t get me wrong: I love my job. But between work and Netflix, the choice is pretty clear, right?

Several studies found a link between the amount of sitting time and the risk of type 2 diabetes. Figures.

So, anyone down to Netflix & chilling tonight? *sarcastic tone*

#2. Sun Fright

The role of vitamin D in bone health is a no-brainer. However, researchers are uncovering additional functions of this bone-sustaining vitamin, particularly in the development of type 2 diabetes. Emerging findings are pointing to a link between low vitamin D status and insulin resistance.

People living in winterland countries tend to have a lower vitamin D status due to the lack of sun exposure. During the winter season, people should consider increasing their vitamin D intake through food and supplements.

#3. Sleeping Late

According to Howard Lewine, M.D., the chief medical editor at Harvard Health Publications, irregular sleeping habits can disrupt the “sleep-wake rhythm” and have an impact on the blood pressure, body temperature, and—most importantly— the release of hormone like insulin.

Bottom line: Set a schedule and stick to it.
